Types of Wicks

Depending on the manufacturer of your heater, your wick may be a simple flat wick or a more complex complete metal wick assembly. Most wicks are generally constructed with a high quality cotton bottom section for excellent absorption topped by a fiberglass burning surface for increased wick life and superior performance.  The two sections are joined together by an entwining thread, most commonly secured and protected by an orange cloth band. The combination of these materials creates a highly effective means to transfer kerosene from the kerosene fuel tank, to the surface of the wick by means of bundles of fine fibers.

Flat Wicks

Flat wicks get there name from their flat appearance. For correct height all flat wicks either have a horizontal set line, pins, or clips to fix their position in the heater. Wicks with horizontal set lines require the installer to line up the guideline to a fix point in the wick holder or wick adjuster assembly. It is crucial that the wick be installed perfectly even for proper performance. Annual wick replacement ensures a clean burning heater and is recommended by the CPSC and American Lung Association. It is important that the heater’s owner’s manual be carefully reviewed to ensure proper installation.

Be sure all old fuel has been removed from your heater and the fuel tank is thoroughly cleaned before installing your new wick. Please consider having your wick installed and serviced professionally by one of our many Servicing Dealers. After installing your new wick, be sure you fill your heater with fresh K-1 kerosene and allow the wick to soak for at least an hour before attempting to light your heater. After lighting the heater, check to be sure the burner is properly seated.  Anyone who will ever use your heater should read the owner’s manual carefully for important safety information, warnings, and other markings any time the heater is used. NEVER LEAVE A KEROSENE HEATER UNATTENDED WHILE IT IS BURNING!

Flat Wicks with Pins

Wicks with pins generally have three metal pins installed in the wick. During wick replacement the installer will insert these metal pins into the corresponding holes in the wick holder or wick adjuster assembly. By design this ensures that the wick is installed at the correct height. This wick style is common to many modern kerosene heaters. Annual wick replacement ensures a clean burning heater and is recommended by the CPSC and American Lung Association. It is important that the heater’s owner’s manual be carefully reviewed to ensure proper installation.

Metal Wicks

Metals wicks, as they are commonly referred to, are comprised of the same high quality materials as flat wicks. However, they also incorporate metal parts that are permanently attached to the wick. Most are cylindrical in shape.

Metal wicks with installed wick sleeve.

The most common metal part to be attached to the wick is the wick sleeve, or wick holder. This wick sleeve can range from simple metal gear plates affixed to the wick to more complex assemblies. These wick sleeves are commonly designed with some means for the wick adjuster shaft to engage the wick sleeve in order to raise and lower the wick.

Some wicks use holes to engage the wick adjuster shaft, as shown below on this Perfection heater replacement wick. Annual wick replacement ensures a clean burning heater and is recommended by the CPSC and American Lung Association. It is important that the heater’s owner’s manual be carefully reviewed to ensure proper installation.

While others have very robust wick sleeves and sturdy gear plates to engage the shaft as shown below.

Some metal wicks have two gear plates that engage the wick shaft, or pinion shaft as it is sometimes called, in two locations rather than just one. Annual wick replacement ensures a clean burning heater and is recommended by the CPSC and American Lung Association. It is important that the heater’s owner’s manual be carefully reviewed to ensure proper installation.

Metal wicks with wick sleeve, gear plate, and spring assembly

Some metal wicks also have springs included that provide the tension that allows the safety shut off to function. The tension is set automatically when the outer wick guide, sometimes referred to as the wick frame, is reinstalled and fastened into place.  Some wicks feature a two piece design which allows the option of replacing the whole wick or just the top section.  In cases where bad fuel is found in the tank, the entire assembly should be replaced to return the heater to proper operation. Annual wick replacement ensures a clean burning heater and is recommended by the CPSC and American Lung Association. It is important that the heater’s owner’s manual be carefully reviewed to ensure proper installation.
